BOMBANANA! - The Review (PC)

BOMBANANA! is a three-player cooperative game in which you will have to work together to defuse a bomb. The title is the result of the work of a small studio, Lefto Studio, and the publisher TARK, both of which have recently entered the video game market. BOMBANANA! represents their business card in the world of video game development and publishing.

THREE monkey men and a bomb

BOMBANANA! The representation of the "three monkeys" resumes: the one who does not speak, the one who does not hear and the one who does not see. Each player will play one of them and, depending on the role assigned, will have a specific task.

The monkey who does not speak will have to consult the defusing manual, which contains all the necessary instructions. The one who does not see, on the other hand, will have the box containing the bomb in front of him and will have to proceed with the defusal following the instructions provided. Finally, the monkey who does not hear will have the task of acting as an intermediary between the two, taking care of "translating" the instructions in both directions.

The "unsight" of the blind monkey

A few simple incorrect instructions or lack of understanding will easily lead to a defusing error. The short time available and the limit of three errors per attempt, however, will make it even easier to get to the throwing of objects, rightly bananas to stay on topic, among team members and a few slaps of disappointment. The real willpower will lie in not getting caught up in the moment and avoiding endless fighting, while the ticking of the bomb will become more and more intense. The roles of the monkeys and their peculiarities have been well distinguished by the developers. I particularly appreciated the representation of the monkey who does not see: on the screen we will in fact have a view composed only of the outlines of the objects closest to us and of the bomb itself.

Between the TWO litigants, the third performs

The importance of the three roles is instead a bit unbalanced. The one he does not hear will have the leading role and it will be up to him to share and interpret information among team members. Immediately after we find the mute, who will have to be able to derive the instructions from the manual, while the blind will have a decidedly "mechanical" task of clicking the buttons and cutting the threads according to the indications received.

On the other hand, it is quite nice how the latter, despite having the opportunity to speak, almost naturally ends up remaining silent to listen to the instructions given to him. Cooperation is therefore essential and pushes the team to find alternative methods of communication, so as to be able to pass on the necessary information in the shortest possible time.

Somewhat limited lobbies weigh heavily

Graphics and Environments - A Van to Die For

The environment in which the monkeys are located is the back of a van. Don't ask me what three monkeys are doing in the back of a van to defuse a bomb: that's just the way it is, and it makes perfect sense. Precisely on this aspect, however, there would be room for improvement. The addition of some alternative environment, such as defusing a bomb inside a building or perhaps aboard an airplane, would have a marginal impact on the gameplay, but it would contribute much more tothe sense of variety of the experience. On the other hand, just look at football games, and the huge amount of different stadiums that are included to understand how even a simple change of setting can contribute to making an experience more varied.

Going deeper into the graphics sector, the hardcover style perfectly embodies the playful and unserious atmosphere of the work. It is therefore not surprising that the low number of polygons allows the game to run happily even on less performing hardware, an aspect that is anything but obvious in modern games.

ZERO! Explosion... of slaps and patience

BOMBANANA! presents itself as a nice cooperative title for three players, capable of entertaining for several sessions and filling a few evenings in company online, even with random monkeys. The presence of a limited number of active players could be a problem, but it is possible to get around it in part by accessing the English servers, which can collect monkeys from all over Europe. The immediate gameplay, the clear objective and the necessary collaboration make the title ideal for spending a few evenings in company even when our crew is not available.

To scratch the experience there is certainly a gameplay that, in itself, is inevitably repetitive, an aspect further accentuated by the short duration of the defusing sessions and the presence of a single setting. At the end of each session, the lobbies punctually turn into a succession of mutual accusations and explanations on the most abstruse indications invented, all fortunately accompanied by lots of laughter.

Biography

- Articolista di KotaWorld.it
You can describe the world of gaming in many ways, for me it remains a portal, a back door, something that you take to get out of the real world and stay a while to live great stories or fight amazing wars that for the luck of this Era we no longer find ourselves experiencing. The magic that surrounds some games has always filled me with emotions, the inevitability in Final Fantasy Crisis Core, the great campaigns of Age of Empires, the defeats to the sound of cannons in Sea of Thieves, the meters of land conquered with rivers of lead in Battlefield.
