To celebrate the end of the festivities for the 25th anniversary of the Total War series, SEGA and The Creative Assembly have officially announced Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000. For the first time in the franchise’s history, the beloved strategic formula moves into the future, embracing the iconic sci-fi universe of Warhammer 40,000 created by Games Workshop. The announcement came during the recent The Game Awards, accompanied by a debut trailer narrated by David Harbour, actor known for Stranger Things and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as a devoted fan of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Harbour will also portray a character in the game, whose identity remains for now shrouded in mystery.

The trailer shows a grim and spectacular galaxy, where the vast armies of humanity fight desperately to defend an empire already in ruins. Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 brings its signature blend of deep strategic gameplay and large-scale battles into a completely new setting, filled with planets to conquer, fleets to enhance, and conflicts that stretch across the stars. The action takes place in a vast open-world galaxy-scale environment, where players will be tasked with leading brutal military campaigns in an era of perpetual war. The stated goal is ambitious: to create the definitive strategic experience set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, intended to expand over time with new content, factions, and iconic heroes.
The game will allow players to take control of four iconic factions at launch: Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks and Aeldari. Each will offer a deeply different gameplay style, both in managing the galactic campaign and in real-time battles. Tactical precision, military power, uncontrolled aggression, or psychic finesse will influence every strategic decision.
Campaigns will unfold across a galactic map, allowing players to invade planets, manage resources, enhance space fleets and face spectacular battles for control of planetary strongholds. Extreme options will be available, such as orbital bombardments and apocalyptic weapons capable of annihilating entire worlds. On the battlefield, players will lead massive armies in devastating tactical confrontations set on planets with diverse biomes and destructible terrain. Elite squads, colossal war machines, and strategic abilities may turn the tide of the most desperate engagements.
For the first time in the Total War series, it will also be possible to deeply customise your forces. From the visual identity of the factions to their colours, from emblems to war machines, every detail can be modelled to create a unique army, with a distinctive destructive style destined to leave its mark in the galaxy.
The project director Attila Mohacsi commented on the announcement: “Warhammer 40,000 offers a sci-fi setting without equal. Its galactic scale, iconic factions, and fierce battles integrate perfectly with the DNA of Total War. We’ve collaborated with Games Workshop for over 15 years, and we’re thrilled to continue this partnership to create the definitive strategic experience dedicated to Warhammer 40,000, as we did with the Total War: Warhammer series.”
Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is currently being developed for PC, but will also mark the debut of the saga on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
