Metro Redux gets free update on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: 4K up to 120 FPS until Metro 2039

Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux return as protagonists thanks to the release of a new Next-Gen update, available today on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The update introduces a series of technical improvements designed to exploit the capabilities of current-generation consoles, offering players the chance to rediscover the origins of the famous post-apocalyptic FPS saga. The good news is that the update is completely free for those who already own both titles, while the PC version has already received the same optimisations.

The main new feature relates to the technical side, with support for native 4K resolution at 60 FPS and an alternative mode that allows reaching 120 FPS via 4K upscaling. Two options designed to meet different needs, enabling users to prioritise image quality or the fluidity of the experience — particularly important during firefights and more intense sequences. Beyond performance improvements, the update introduces further visual enhancements and platform-specific optimisations, modernising both aspects for current hardware. The goal is to make returning to the metro tunnels of Moscow more enjoyable and technically updated, without altering the identity of two productions that have helped Metro become one of the most recognisable first-person shooter franchises.

For those who have never had the chance to get involved with the series, Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux represent the first two chapters of the saga, set in a Russia devastated by a nuclear catastrophe. In a world where the surface has become extremely dangerous, survivors have found refuge in the underground network of the Moscow metro, giving rise to communities often divided by ideological conflicts, struggles for resources, and threats far more unsettling. The two adventures combine first-person combat, exploration, survival elements, and a strong narrative component, building an atmosphere in which resource management and constant tension assume a fundamental role. The new update therefore presents an interesting opportunity for veterans eager to return to the metro tunnels, as well as for those looking to experience the saga for the first time.

The timing of the update isn’t random. Metro Redux’s return comes just months after the launch of Metro 2039, the next chapter in the series due on 4 febbraio 2027. This new adventure introduces a fresh perspective, placing players in the role of the Stranger, a character whose story is meant to continue the narrative universe established across previous entries. The Next-Gen update therefore allows players to relive the events that defined the saga before the arrival of the new chapter, offering a smoother and visually updated experience. Full patch notes, including technical improvements and platform-specific features, are available via Metro’s official channels.

The Next-Gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux is now available free of charge today, 3 November 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for all owners of the respective games. Optimisations are also already available on PC via Steam, Windows, Epic Games Store and GOG, while Metro 2039 arrives on 4 February 2027.

Lorenzo "WaR" Agonigi was born in the now too distant 1995 and already three years later, in 1998, he began his gaming career, with a flaming Nintendo 64. I have to be honest, I wasn't a pro gamer right from the start, so much so that my first experiences more than as a gamer were as a spectator: while my parents, in turn, played, I enjoyed watching them (hey, I invented Twitch ten years in advance!!).
