During the Nintendo Direct dedicated to Nintendo Switch 2, Square Enix announced the return of two RPGs that made an impact in recent years, ready to (re)capture fans on a new platform. FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE e BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY HD Remaster will arrive on Nintendo’s next-gen console, confirming the Japanese publisher’s intention to strengthen its presence on Switch 2 with high-profile titles.
FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE
It had never happened before: FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, winner of the “RPG of the Year” award at The Game Awards 2020, is making its debut on a Nintendo console for the first time. And it will do so in style, with the INTERGRADE version, which includes graphic improvements, additional content, and the special episode dedicated to Yuffie Kisaragi, EPISODE INTERmission.
For those unfamiliar with it, this is an expanded remaster of one of the most beloved chapters of the Final Fantasy saga, set in the dystopian city of Midgar. The protagonist is Cloud Strife, former member of the elite military SOLDIER, who joins the rebel group Avalanche to oppose the plans of the corporation Shinra. In this new version, the enhanced graphics will utilise the Switch 2 hardware, and the experience will be enriched by new textures, greater fluidity, and extra content.
This is a significant moment for Nintendo, which is welcoming, for the first time in its modern history, a chapter of Final Fantasy VII in “remake” form, a sign that the relationship between Square Enix and the big N is strengthening.
BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY HD Remaster
More than a simple remaster, BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY HD Remaster aims to reveal (or rediscover) one of the most interesting RPGs of the Nintendo 3DS era. Originally released in 2012, the title had won both critical and public acclaim thanks to a winning mix of classic aesthetics, innovative combat system, and engaging narrative.
The game tells the story of the “Warriors of Light”, including the priestess Agnès Oblige and the young Tiz Arrior, in a fantasy world threatened by a calamity that has darkened the elemental crystals. The Switch 2 remaster includes a HD graphics, new mini-games, updated interface, and improved audio, along with exclusive content that promises to further expand the original experience.
The core of the gameplay remains the brilliant “Brave & Default” system, which allows the player to manage offensive and defensive turns tactically. This is supplemented by the classic Final Fantasy-style job system, with over 20 selectable and combinable jobs. All of this is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Revo, who has previously composed music for Attack on Titan and Linked Horizon.
