Magic: The Gathering looks to the future: the 2027 sets revealed

During the preview panel at MagicCon: Amsterdam, Wizards of the Coast unveiled the first details of the original sets scheduled for 2027, along with new information on Frattura della Realtà, the set that will conclude the current narrative arc begun three years ago with Terre Selvagge di Eldraine.

The current storyline of Magic will reach its conclusion next 2 October 2026 with the release of Frattura della Realtà, an expansion that will see the return of one of the franchise’s most iconic characters: Jace Beleren. After the events of Tarkir: La Dracotempesta and the confrontation that took place in the Realm of Meditation, Jace has decided to reshape the Multiverse according to his ideal vision, giving birth to a profoundly altered reality. Wizards of the Coast has teased the return of several saga staples, including Chandra and Garruk, who will appear in entirely new forms and deeply influenced by the reality shaped by the famous telepath. The expansion will represent the narrative peak of the last three years of Magic and will officially open the door to the new narrative arc that will accompany the game for several years starting from 2027.

To celebrate the release of the expansion, Wizards of the Coast will also launch a new Secret Lair Bundle dedicated to Frattura della Realtà. The product will include two Collector Boosters, six Play Boosters, a set of traditional foil base lands and two foil promotional cards selected from ten special versions specially created for the occasion. The illustrations reinterpret some of the main set cards as if they had been drawn directly from Jace’s distorted visions, presenting an entirely consistent artistic style with the rewritten reality theme.

In 2026, a new version of the beloved Mystery Booster will also arrive, this time entirely designed for the Commander format. Mystery Booster: Commander Edition is indeed intended for Commander draft and will be officially unveiled at the next Gen Con. Wizards of the Coast has not yet revealed further details, but it’s one of the most anticipated updates from fans of the most popular multiplayer format in Magic.

The future of Magic will officially begin on 5 February 2027 with the release of Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, an expansion that will take players for the first time into an entire underwater plane. The set will be populated by merfolk, seals, crustaceans and numerous other marine creatures, as well as mysterious deities who govern the ocean currents. The story will revolve around the conflict between two warring kingdoms and a group of unlikely heroes called upon to prevent their homeland from being swallowed by the abyss. With Nauctis, Wizards will launch a new multi-year narrative arc that will accompany Magic: The Gathering for several years.

The second major set of 2027 arrives on 4 June with Kamigawa: Titanbreach, one of the wilder and more intriguing ideas presented during the panel. The expansion will collide two of the most beloved planes for players: Kamigawa and Ikoria. A massive Omenpath will open in the neon-lit skies above the city of Towashi, allowing the colossal creatures of Ikoria to invade Kamigawa, scattering destruction and forcing the inhabitants of the technological plane to unite for survival. The result promises to be a spectacular clash between cyberpunk sci-fi and giant fantasy monsters, two of the most cherished settings of recent years.

The new narrative arc continues on 1st October 2027 with the release of Zhalfir, the first set entirely dedicated to the famous realm finally returning to the Multiverse as an independent plane. The expansion will allow players to explore a land rich in magic and deeply rooted in its own Afrofantasy culture, offering a completely new aesthetic for the game. It will also see Teferi Akosa return — one of Magic’s most iconic characters and master of chronomancy — guiding players through the discovery of the new plane. According to Wizards of the Coast, Zhalfir will also introduce new and innovative game mechanics that leverage the set’s cultural and visual identity.

Wizards of the Coast has finally announced the full 2027 MagicCon calendar, which for the first time will include four international events. The events will take place in Detroit from 26 to 28 February, in Tokyo from 14 to 16 May, in Las Vegas from 27 to 29 August and finally in Amsterdam from 3 to 5 December. Particularly significant is the arrival of MagicCon: Tokyo, marking the event’s first-ever debut in Japan and confirming Wizards’ growing focus on the Asian market.

Lorenzo "WaR" Agonigi was born in the now too distant 1995 and already three years later, in 1998, he began his gaming career, with a flaming Nintendo 64. I have to be honest, I wasn't a pro gamer right from the start, so much so that my first experiences more than as a gamer were as a spectator: while my parents, in turn, played, I enjoyed watching them (hey, I invented Twitch ten years in advance!!).
