DLSS 5, official debut on 3 September with NBA 2K27: here's how much performance will fall

It has been several months since the announcement of DLS 5, the new NVIDIA technology designed to further improve the visual performance of video games. After the first official demonstrations and experimental versions made by modders, the DLSS 5 is finally preparing to debut in a game available on the market.

Technology will officially arrive Thursday 3 September, in conjunction with the launch of NBA 2K27, which will be the first title to support it. The announcement came in the past hours from NVIDIA, near the Gamescom 2026 and a few days from the beginning of IFA.

The DLSS 5 will sacrifice performance for visual quality

Unlike previous DLSS versions, the DLSS 5 is not born with the goal of increasing the number of frames per second. On the contrary, the use of the new technology will involve a rather important performance cost, with a reduction in performance that, according to NVIDIA, can reach between 50% and 60%.

The reason is related to the operation of technology, which focuses mainly on changing lighting and improving image details. The developers will still keep control of the changes introduced by DLSS 5, thus being able to decide how and where to apply the interventions on the graphic rendering.

For the moment, NBA 2K27 is the only title to have officially implemented the DLSS 5. The first results seem to be quite convincing, especially when compared to what NVIDIA showed during the presentation of technology and the trailers of the past weeks.

RTX 5090 up to 590 FPS at 1440p

NVIDIA has also published several DLSS 5 performance graphics on NBA 2K27, comparing video cards ranging from RTX 5060 to RTX 5090 and different resolutions, from 1080p to 4K.

According to the data provided by the company, a NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT2 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 NT1 would be able to reach about 370 FPS in 4K, using Ultra preset and active ray tracing. Passing to resolution 1440p, the result would go up to 590 FPS.

Very high numbers, but that should be contextualized considering the performance cost stated by NVIDIA for activation of DLSS 5. The new technology seems to follow a different direction than the previous versions of the DLSS, focusing more on image quality than on the increase in frame rate.

Other games incoming

NBA 2K27 will only represent the first step for the DLSS 5. NVIDIA has confirmed that additional compatible titles will be announced over the coming weeks and months.

It will be precisely with the arrival of these games that you can better understand the real potential of the new technology and, above all, if the significant decrease in performance will be justified by the visual improvements offered.
