Nintendo has decided to reveal some exciting news about the much-anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch. Although official information is still limited, the confirmation that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support backward compatibility with current Switch titles and the Nintendo Switch Online service has delighted the fan and industry community.
Through a series of tweets on Twitter, Shuntaro Furukawa, president of the Japanese company, has shared a highly anticipated statement. The successor to Nintendo Switch – for now nicknamed by fans Nintendo Switch 2 – will be able to run games from the current platform, a feature that will allow players to continue using their library without interruption. This news is particularly important for users, as Nintendo has not always guaranteed backward compatibility in previous generations, making this a historic step for the company.

The Nintendo Switch Online service, launched in 2018, has allowed users to access a range of benefits including multiplayer gaming, a library of classic NES and SNES titles, and more recently, Nintendo 64 and Game Boy games. The confirmation that Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor indicates not only that current online services will continue, but also suggests that additional expansions and improvements might arrive for the next generation. Nintendo’s move highlights a strategy of continuity for the company. Just as Sony and Microsoft have done with their respective platforms PlayStation and Xbox, Nintendo aims to reduce the barriers between generations, facilitating a smooth transition that enables players to move to the new console without abandoning their existing game collections and online services.
Recently, Nintendo has announced that the official announcement of the Switch successor will take place by the end of the fiscal year, i.e. by April 2025. Although the exact date has not been revealed, speculation points to a possible reveal in the early months of 2025. Industry analysts and fans speculate that Nintendo may use one of its events or a dedicated presentation at the start of the year to announce the console in grand style. Expectations for the new console are extremely high: the Nintendo Switch has sold over 130 million units globally and continues to record significant numbers despite being on the market since 2017. With the introduction of the successor, Nintendo will need to strike a balance between innovation and continuity, responding to the needs of a user base that has, meanwhile, become accustomed to the portability and unique hybrid functionalities of the Switch.
Many questions remain about what the technical specifications of the Switch 2 will be, the innovative features it will introduce, and, above all, how Nintendo intends to differentiate itself in the next-generation console market. While the competition with PlayStation and Xbox becomes increasingly fierce, Nintendo is called upon to innovate without losing sight of its unique philosophy and its approach focused on games for everyone.
