Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 - The Review

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is the sequel set 100 years after the now outdated title of 2011, developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment. With this chapter, the two studios have taken over the project, succeeding Relic Entertainment, which, after a series of corporate upheavals, lost control of the saga.

Re-reading my review of Warhammer 40K Battlesector, I can only begin with the same words: "Warhammer 40,000 has reached in recent years more than a game concept, that of a cult". A cult that is successfully attracting ever more passionate fans. Within this vortex of attraction, stand out two recent works that have helped expand knowledge of this obscure universe. One of them is the episode of Secret Level set in the universe of Warhammer, with protagonist once again Titus. The other work is precisely this sequel, with the Legion Astartes Lieutenant once again at the centre of the story in the second chapter of the saga: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. A title that not only reprises the epic battle of its predecessor, but continues to intensify the lethal appeal of this dark future.

Gameplay: The Epicness of the Imperial Butchery

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 shows how to channel the fury of the battle into the most chaotic mayhem. Frenzied combat, surrounded by dozens of enemies who assault us without mercy. Weapons that rip through flesh and metal, never stopping. The narrative, mirroring this same frenzy, merges with the unshakable cult of the Emperor. As Titus, we’ll find ourselves at the heart of a campaign against the Tyranids and the Chaos, ready to prove our worth and our faith while cutting down countless foes.

The gameplay is third-person and combines close-quarters combat with short- and medium-range attacks. At our disposal are the series’ iconic weapons, such as the Chainsword and the Requiem Pistol. However, launching into attacks without fear can prove deadly: during close-quarters combat, we will have no opportunity to defend ourselves, making it essential to gauge the timing and parry attacks with precise timing. Facing large numbers of enemies, often simultaneously, requires a certain level of attention. Spectacular finishing moves, which will knock down enemies with minimal remaining health, are another element that enriches the gameplay, useful for immersing oneself in the Warhammer 40K atmosphere and avoiding damage during critical moments. Although the variety of enemies is not extensive in the early stages, the game later expands with the forces of Chaos, introducing a wide array of adversaries to face.

The highlight is the co-op mode, which lets you tackle the campaign and side missions with two friends or even unknown Space Marine companions. This makes the game even more enjoyable, giving us the thrill of facing waves of tyrannids shoulder to shoulder, brothers in arms. The mode works well, even more so in the side missions, which prepare you for multiplayer battles.

Multiplayer: Units and Honour on the Battlefield

In Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, the competitive mode offers some PvP (player versus player) game modes where teams challenge each other to outperform opponents by working together. The game features three competitive modes:

  • Conquer the Zone

A classic mode in which teams must control three areas on the map. Each area captured earns points, as does its maintenance. The more areas a team controls, the more points it accumulates, until victory.

  • Conquer and Control

In this mode, the area to conquer changes periodically, moving between different areas of the map. Battles are more concentrated and dynamic, as players must adapt to the area’s changes and reposition quickly at every shift.

  • Annihilation

Deathmatch mode in which, let’s not say it, victory is determined by the number of enemies eliminated. The team that accumulates the most kills prevails on the battlefield.

In all these modes, the nature of the different classes and how easily you can fall if caught off guard will fuel a tight team-based game, where you either cooperate or die. You won’t even need to use microphones—the tactical advantage gained by fighting together will be obvious and essential to prevail on the battlefield. The variety of classes is also commendable and well-balanced. Each class will function well when teamed with classes of different types. The most skilled players will know how to exploit any class thanks to its unique traits, which, when used wisely, will make you carriers of death.

Personalisation - Adorn your unit with the glory of your own

In Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, you can take on the role of one of the six available classes: Tactical, Assault, Vanguard, Bastion, Sniper, and Heavy. Each class offers a unique set of abilities, and with every mission completed you’ll have the opportunity to customise your Space Marine and their weapons, thanks to a wide range of cosmetic and ability options. Points earned in multiplayer and operations can be spent to unlock 25 class-specific perks in the armory, adding personalisation to your gameplay. The armory is also useful for upgrading weapons, unlocking stronger variants and exclusive cosmetics to make your Space Marine truly unique.

The Season Pass in this moment offers a nice variety of cosmetic items and personalisation, all obviously inspired by WH40K lore. On YouTube, you can already spot some cute creations from other players. As good developers, they have promised that new mission, enemy, and weapon additions will still be given free of charge to all players.

A Dark, Detailed and Majestic World

From a graphic standpoint, the game delivers a visually spectacular representation of the Warhammer 40K universe. The environments, from the departure spaceship to the colossal imperial structures, are detailed and majestic, reflecting the darkness and decay of this dystopian future. Character models, particularly those of the Space Marines, are crafted with a meticulous attention to detail and easter egg, adding depth to the game and paying homage to its lore. The use of lighting and shadows adds another layer to the drama of the battles, while particle effects during explosions and close-quarters combat provide further visual impact to the action. Regarding performance, I found the use of DLSS truly useful. Throughout the game, I managed to maintain medium graphical quality at around 60fps, but during one of the final missions, where the screen was filled with countless elements, my frame rate collapsed vertically, failing to reach even 20fps. Forced to study the graphical settings, I saw my game come back to life by setting DLSS to maximum performance, without significant visual compromises.

Conclusion: The Imperial Glory Achieved

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a frenetic and engaging experience that captures the essence of the Warhammer 40K universe even for those who have yet to encounter it. Intense combat, an exciting co-op mode, and a competitive multiplayer, offer numerous hours of fun for both fans and newcomers. Visually impressive, the game stands out for its majestic environments and attention to detail. A chapter that exceeds expectations, offering action, strategy, and a faithful representation of the dark future of Warhammer, attracting thousands of new fans. The Emperor protects.

Biography

- Articolista di KotaWorld.it
You can describe the world of gaming in many ways, for me it remains a portal, a back door, something that you take to get out of the real world and stay a while to live great stories or fight amazing wars that for the luck of this Era we no longer find ourselves experiencing. The magic that surrounds some games has always filled me with emotions, the inevitability in Final Fantasy Crisis Core, the great campaigns of Age of Empires, the defeats to the sound of cannons in Sea of Thieves, the meters of land conquered with rivers of lead in Battlefield.
