RTX 60 towards 2028? The new generation could be long in coming

2027 may not be the year for new GeForce graphics cards. Despite past rumors pointing to the second half of 2027 as a possible launch window, sources such as Notebookcheck, TweakTown, OC3D, glitched.online, and 24/7 Wall St. now place the next-generation NVIDIA RTX 60 in 2028.

If the rumors are confirmed, it would be the third postponement of the launch of the 60 series in twelve months and would seem to reiterate the strategy of the major GPU manufacturers to PC to extend the life cycle of a single hardware architecture from two to three calendar years.

From 2026 to 2027 2028

For at least 1 year, the launch period of the RTX 60 has been an unknown.

Initially, the launch of the new "Rubin-based" products was estimated for 2026, fully respecting the biennial cadence with which NVIDIA GPUs are marketed.

However, over the months the time window has slipped first to the beginning of 2027, then to the second half of 2027 and now, according to well-known leakers Moore's Law Is Dead and kopite7kimi, to 2028.

According to the Notebookcheck website, NVIDIA would be following the same pattern that is already affecting AMD's new RDNA 5-based hardware.

However, the picture changed rapidly: at the beginning of September, the second half of 2027 was still indicated as a probable time window, while now it has moved to 2028.

It is therefore not correct to speak of postponement, as, in fact, there has never been an official release date or communications from NVIDIA, but roadmaps suggested by leaks, even if many of these have often correctly predicted the development plan of past GPUs.

AI takes precedence

According to reconstructions, artificial intelligence would be responsible for this delay.

NVIDIA would in fact be freeing up TSMC's maximum possible production capacity to allocate it to its AI-based data center products.

Accelerators intended for artificial intelligence, in fact, can generate much higher earnings than normal GeForce. As a result, in the presence of limited production capacity, NVIDIA prefers to prioritize the AI sector at the expense of consumer GPUs.

To further complicate everything there would also be the complex situation that has been involving the memory market for months now.

HBM's growing demand for AI accelerators is making global production difficult, and graphics card consumers are paying the price, leading gamers to compete indirectly with data centers.

NVIDIA, then, has already officially presented "Vera Rubin", a platform intended mainly for artificial intelligence and data centers.

It differs, therefore, from the alleged "Gaming Rubin", associated with the leaks to the future RTX 60.

Blackwell for three years

If the launch of the new graphics cards is confirmed for 2028, it would result in a particularly long commercial life for the RTX 50.

In fact, in recent years NVIDIA has accustomed us to releasing a new series of GPUs about every two years and this delay would bring the life cycle of the current generation to three.

The company, however, could decide to fill this void through an RTX 50 "SUPER" update, but even in this case we are talking about simple speculations.

The scenario, therefore, promises to be paradoxically excellent for owners of an RTX 50: Blackwell would remain the current generation for a longer period of time than normal.

AMD doesn't seem to be doing any better

Looking at the competition, production strategies seem to overlap.

According to leaker Kepler_L2, the future AMD RDNA 5 range would also be set to release in 2028. The only exception would be a chip called AT2, which would be expected as early as 2027.

If both major companies really postponed their next GPUs to 2028, next year would be completely focused on extending the life cycle of their respective current generations.

Intel could take advantage of this, but, at the moment, the Arc family does not represent a direct alternative to high-end NVIDIA cards.

What changes for those who want to update the PC

This possible delay would mainly affect those who thought of skipping the current generation.

Unlike those who own an RTX 50 graphics card, owners of previous GPUs who thought they were waiting for the RTX 60 would find themselves having to potentially wait until 2028 to update their PC or fall back on a card of the current generation.

However, prices could also be affected. Usually, GPU prices tend to drop when the release of the new generation is imminent. If the launch of the next cards is still a long way off, prices could remain high longer.

What happened to Gaming?

The real question perhaps is not when the new NVIDIA graphics cards will be released, but how important the gaming market is today for the company.

For years, in fact, GPUs have been among the main products through which to show the capabilities of new production processes. This role today seems to be more occupied by AI accelerators, which have become infinitely more profitable.

That's not to say NVIDIA will be abandoning gaming, but it's certainly a wake-up call to how the company's priorities have been changing in recent years.

Conclusion

Pending official confirmation, 2028 therefore remains only a window indicated by leaks. If it turns out to be correct, however, it would mark a major change in the pace of the GPU market, increasingly conditioned by the race for artificial intelligence.

Jacopo Romigi, alias Jaco Prom, born in 2008, cultivates the passion for video games as a child. The “first love” was Nintendo, that still remains its point of reference thanks to its brands and games often unique in its own genre. Growing up, however, began to be interested in the world too PlayStation and PC, to develop a true passion for trophy hunting and, more generally, for achievement and completeism. This is why it hardly leaves a game in the middle: once started, the goal is to get to see the so-called platinum trophy on the top right. This completeist vein also has a strong connection with the physical video game: collecting guardians to see their games on the shelf has for him a charm that the digital cannot replace. From this passion also comes the desire to tell the video games with reviews and insights.
