After years of waiting, Rockstar Games has finally shown Grand Theft Auto 6 in much more depth, presenting an Extended Look that allows you to take a close look at the gameplay, the game world and many of the mechanics that will accompany Jason and Lucia in their adventure.
The presentation lasts about 26 minutes and represents a much more complete look than the previous trailers. Perhaps the most surprising thing, however, concerns the way the movie was made. All the material shown was captured directly in the game on PlayStation 5, making the technical level reached by the new chapter of the series even more impressive.
A huge and incredibly detailed world
The Extended Look immediately highlights the amount of detail present within Leonidas, the Florida-inspired region in which the adventure will take place.
Vice City appears extremely populated, with hundreds of elements that seem to move at the same time. Traffic, pedestrians, animals, vegetation, shops, homes and activities contribute to a much more dynamic environment than the one seen in Grand Theft Auto V.
The variety of NPCs is equally evident. The characters have different builds, faces, clothing and animations, while their reactions seem to be more related to what is happening in their vicinity.
The result is a city that aims to feel less like a simple setting and more like an autonomous ecosystem, in which the player can simply get lost even without following the main story.
Jason and Lucia are at the center of the experience
One of the most interesting aspects concerns the relationship between the two protagonists.
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos can be controlled while exploring, and the player can switch between the two characters in different situations. The two can also work together during criminal activities, making their relationship a key part of the experience.
During car journeys it will also be possible to change position inside the vehicle, allowing one of the two protagonists to drive while the other can take care of observing the environment or using weapons.
The relationship between Jason and Lucia also seems to have much greater weight than the relationships between the protagonists of the previous chapters. Rockstar is in fact building the story around a criminal couple forced to collaborate, with their relationship destined to evolve over the course of the adventure.
A world full of activities and new mechanics
Rockstar doesn't seem to want to turn Leonidas into a simple huge scenario to go through between missions.
The film shows car races, motorcycles, water activities, skydiving, diving, training and numerous other activities.
The player will then be able to move away from the main plot and devote themselves to the daily lives of the protagonists. Some sequences show Jason and Lucia engaged in decidedly quieter activities, while others feature large-scale chases and shootouts.
The interiors also seem to play an important role. Houses, shops and other buildings are characterized by numerous interactive elements, with the possibility of performing seemingly trivial actions that contribute to the feeling of really living within the game world.
Stealing a car will no longer be so simple
The car theft system also seems to have been investigated.
The sequences shown by Rockstar suggest that drivers will be able to react during a robbery attempt, forcing the protagonist to physically manage the situation.
There is also a system related to physical endurance, which can come into play during certain actions.
The result should make the thefts less immediate and more believable than in previous chapters, transforming what was often a simple interaction into a small gameplay situation.
Rockstar also showed a system dedicated to the physical condition of the protagonists.
Nutrition, training and daily activities can affect Jason and Lucia's body. The protagonists can in fact engage in different sports activities, including swimming and training.
The game therefore seems to want to maintain a certain continuity between the actions performed by the player and the appearance of the characters, following a philosophy already experimented in part with other Rockstar titles.
Snapmatic is also back
Among the features shown also appears Snapmatic, the photographic system inside the Grand Theft Auto universe.
The protagonists will be able to use their smartphones to take photographs and document what happens during the exploration.
However, Jason and Lucia's particular situation should also have consequences on this system, considering that the two are wanted criminals and cannot behave freely as normal citizens.
The police system has been completely overhauled
One of the most interesting changes concerns the way law enforcement will react to the player's actions.
The wanted level can go up to six stars, thus exceeding the previous limit present in GTA 5.
The police also seem to be able to recognize the player more through their appearance, clothing, and the vehicle used. This could make it much more important to change cars or change your appearance during an escape.
The sequences shown in the Extended Look also feature numerous patrols, helicopters, chases and shootouts at the same time, highlighting the amount of elements that the engine can handle during the most chaotic situations.
Impressive graphics, but a doubt remains
The most important technical data of the Extended Look, however, remains the confirmation that the sequences were captured directly on PlayStation 5.
So it's not simply a pre-rendered movie created to show a theoretical result. What we've seen comes straight from the game running on the Sony console.
However, Rockstar has not specified in detail the resolution, frame rate or graphics modes used during the presentation. As a result, it is still too early to determine how GTA 6 will behave in the final version.
What we can judge is however extremely impressive. Vice City has a density of elements never seen before in the series and the game manages to stage traffic, NPCs, vehicles, police, explosions and chases while maintaining a very high level of detail.
GTA 6 aims to be much more than just a new chapter
The Extended Look seems to have made one thing clear above all. Rockstar does not want to limit itself to building a larger map, but aims to create a world capable of continuously reacting to the player's actions.
Between secondary activities, police system, environmental interactions, physical evolution of the protagonists, car management and the relationship between Jason and Lucia, the news seems to affect practically every aspect of the experience.
The real test will only come with the final version, when it will be possible to freely explore Leonidas and check how much of what we have seen actually manages to work during a normal game.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be available from November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
